The benefits of good health and safety leadership

Safety Forward, Marisa Firkins - Health & Safety

Last week I was busy preparing for my next IOSH Managing Safely Course in Walsall, West Midlands. Whist I had a half hour to spare I popped in to a tyre fitting centre for a quote. I got chatting the manager behind the counter about my job in health and safety.

As the conversation went on he explained that the company take on apprentices throughout the year and how they came with a specific set of risks that needed to be considered. He said by having good standards in health and safety they had been able to attract and retain apprentices for a number of years.

It got me thinking about how important it is to set the health and safety goals right from the start of a company recruiting staff. Staff behaviour and culture is key to retaining quality employees and sets a professional image to those on the outside. If your company grows and wins new business, you need to show you take H&S performance seriously.

Leadership is very different to management. To win over and get in to the mind set of new and young employees you need to lead by example. Good leaders will influence their  employees ethics and attitudes. It is no accident that H&S is at the heart of every successful companies values.

If your business is starting to grow, now could be a good time to think about setting the standards.
