Has your business and productivity started to grow? Are you increasing your workforce and investing in new equipment? If so, now is a good time to start considering whether your current health and safety systems are adequate. Here are some pointers;
- Does current or new equipment feature in your site risk assessment. If not, take some time to consider whether their programs of maintenance or compliance with legislation such as Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) and Personal Protective Equipment Regulations are included.
- Do you have arrangements in place to communicate health and safety issues with your staff. Is it included on the staff meeting agenda? Do staff know who is the company lead on health and safety?
- Do staff induct or brief visitors to your site on health & safety arrangements such as emergency evacuation plans, smoking arrangements and vehicle movement?
- Is the workplace regularly inspected and any findings reported and acted upon?
This is just a small sample of things to consider as your business grows and takes new direction. Your staff are your biggest asset. Take care of them and they will be more likely to look after your company’s interests. When employers have good health and safety systems in place, staff feel safer, more confident and valued. It makes good business sense to get equipped with the knowledge and skills to improve safety at work.
